The story behind Rite Way

A company is a reflection of the people who own it, run it and operate it.  Two key people responsible for the success of Rite Way are its president, Les Hulicsko and its general manager, Eugene Lucas.

Les Hulicsko, President

Les Hulicsko built his first piece of farm equipment in 1972 out of his welding shop, where he fabricated miscellaneous ironworks.  One of his employees encouraged him to build a rock picker, as farmers were eager to buy them.  Les researched the rock picker market and found that there were two types of pickers – one to pick up small rocks, and one to pick larger rocks.

Les decided there must be a way to build a machine that could do both jobs, and concluded that a hydraulically-powered reel would be the answer.  When others told him it simply wouldn’t work, he was determined to prove them wrong. And as an engineer, he believed he had the ability to do so.

Not only was Les right – but hydraulically-powered reels are now the standard for the rock picker industry.

When Les established Rite Way Mfg. Co. Ltd. and got financing to manufacture 25 rock pickers, it seemed optimistic.  But by the end of the first year, he had already manufactured and sold more than 360 units.  Farmers loved the simplicity and versatility of the equipment, along with its strength and durability.

Next, Les looked at rock windrowers.  The existing ones were very big, cumbersome and expensive.  By taking what he learned from building the rock picker, along with his philosophy of making equipment that’s simple, efficient and durable, he developed a rock windrower that was simple, hydraulically driven and very durable, at an affordable price.  Now, the average farmer had access to this equipment.  Rite Way then began building a harrow bar and a harrow packer drawbar complete with its patented field/transport pivot wheel system. This system is the heart and soul of transporting, folding and unfolding today’s large farm machinery.

At the same time, Les was running a parking lot maintenance business and was unhappy with the street sweepers that were available.  So, he began to design and build his own street sweepers.  He eventually spun that business off to Sweeprite Mfg. Inc., purchased a plant in Imperial, Saskatchewan, and moved Rite Way Mfg. to a new location.

Les hired Eugene Lucas to run the Rite Way plant, and together they continued to develop new farm equipment.  A chisel plow was added to the product line.  And then the jumbo harrow  was introduced, and became the industry standard.  Land rollers now round out the product line.

Rite Way now employs 50 people and is a major employer in the area.

Eugene Lucas, General Manager

Eugene Lucas' philosophy is that when the customer is satisfied -- the company and its employees will grow and prosper.  Eugene knows what will satisfy his customers when it comes to farm equipment.  He's lived in the heart of Saskatchewan's grainbelt all his life.  And, he's been building and using farm equipment for the better part of that time.

Eugene started as a welder in the Imperial plant in 1966. The owners of Imperial Welding & Machine Ltd. recognized his drive and innovation, and quickly promoted him.  And when the company changed hands and became Midtown Farm Equipment, Eugene became plant manager.

When Rite Way took over the plant in 1981, Eugene took on as many roles as there were jobs to do -- including Parts Man, Purchasing and Inside Sales. With his knowledge and experience, it was only logical that Eugene become the General Manager of the Imperial operation.

Over the years, Eugene and Les have worked closely together to develop the kind of farm equipment farmers want and need.  And through their combined efforts, Rite Way has become a successful, dynamic company known for its quality equipment, quality service and its innovative designs.
